The Grand Canyon National Park is owned and operated by the National Park Service of the Department of the Interior, which maintains several parks and more than 400 natural, cultural and recreational sites across the united states. Founded in 1919, the park is a World Heritage Site that is comprised of over 1,200,000 acres of land area. The park supports junior ranger and educational programs. The Grand Canyon National Park also organizes mule and river trips, as well as hiking and camping activities. The park provides guided tours and lodging facilities. Nearly five million people see the 1 mile deep (1.6 km) Grand Canyon each year. Most of them see it from their car at overlooks along the South Rim (this includes Grand Canyon Village, Hermits Rest, and Desert View). The South Rimis the most accessible part of the park and is open all year. A much smaller number of people see the Canyon from the North Rim, which lies just 10 miles / 16 km (as thecondor flies) directly across the Canyon from the South Rim.
