The man allegedly got into the patrol car while armed with a gun after assaulting a Fountain Valley police officer on Friday.

It happened Friday in the 17300 block of San Mateo Street, north of Slater Avenue and east of Brookhurst Street

Police in Fountain Valley fatally shot a man who allegedly tried to enter vehicles and later brandished a gun.

The department said it wasn't clear if the man had the gun before getting into the officer's car, or if he got it once he was inside.
