A divided Supreme Court on Friday put off ruling on the Trump administration’s request to allow the president to remove the leader of an independent government watchdog agency until at least after a lower-court hearing next week.

The Supreme Court ruled Friday that an order reinstating Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger into his position will remain in place for at least a few days while a lower court process plays out. The Trump administration had asked the justices to lift the order from Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.

The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, weighs in on a case involving the new Trump administration for the first time.
