Baxter International said it would temporarily close production at its North Cove, North Carolina-based facility, raising concerns about a potential nationwide shortage.

The plant is Baxter International's North Cove manufacturing facility in Marion, which is about 35 miles northeast of Asheville. Helene unleashed unprecedented amounts of rain throughout the western part of the state, killing dozens and ravaging numerous communities, homes, and other structures, including the plant.

The IV fluid disruption comes as more than 800,000 people are still without power. The majority of these people are in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, but some in Florida and Virginia are also affected. Among the other residual affects of the storm are potential hindrances to early voting.
