NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton was digging in to face Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning on Thursday night and hordes of Yankees fans had their backs to the field. Those fans were flocking toward the exits, trying to beat the mass exodus out onto 161st street as the Red Sox closed out their 6-3 series-opening victory in the Bronx.
The Yankees survived a sloppy second inning in which they committed three errors, limiting the damage to one run. They wriggled out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the fifth, surrendering just a sacrifice fly.
Defensive errors and a late homer from Roman Anthony sealed the Red Sox victory in New York.
