Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose died Monday. He was 83. After reaching the pinnacle of the sport he loved, Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling while manager of his hometown Reds. That came just four years after Rose had broken Ty Cobb’s hit record, a mark that still stands. He is MLB's all-time hits leader with 4,256.

Darrel Chaney spent seven of his 11 years playing Major League Baseball as Rose’s teammate in Cincinnati. “We didn’t have a ‘C’ for ‘captain’ for him in those days, but we all called him captain because that’s what he was,” Chaney said. They won a World Series together in 1975.

Reds legend Pete Rose died naturally as a result of heart disease, a spokesperson for the Clark County, Nevada, medical examiner said Tuesday morning. The medical examiner's office confirmed on Monday that a family member found Rose dead at his home.
