Japanese jet fighters fired warning flares at a Russian military reconnaissance plane that violated Japan’s airspace, the first time Tokyo has taken such an aggressive stance against incursions of its airspace.

Japan's defense minister said the use of flares was a legitimate response to airspace violation and "we plan to use it without hesitation."

The infringements were the first by Russia in five years, according to the Japanese defense ministry. A fighter fired a warning flare in response.

Japan is strongly alarmed by recent airspace breaches by China and Russia and other military activities by them around the country, Defense Minister Minoru Kihara said Tuesday. Kihara's remarks came a day after a Russian military patrol plane flew over waters in the Sea of Japan north of Hokkaido

Moscow's actions is the first airspace incursion into Japan by a Russian plane since 2019, when a Tu-95 bomber flew over southern Okinawa and the Izu Islands.
