San Diego has several events to celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned they had been freed — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Juneteenth is right around the corner -- and San Diego is chock-full of events and ways to celebrate and honor the holiday.

Jonathan Shields-Pullum was shot multiple times on June 17, 2023, around 6:45 p.m. during a celebration at 2455 Cushing Road in Liberty Station, according to the San Diego Police Department.
