U.S. forces have fully withdrawn from an air base in western Iraq in implementation of an agreement with the Iraqi government, Iraqi officials said Saturday. Washington and Baghdad agreed in 2024 to wind down a U.
American forces left the base in western Iraq on Saturday, after using the installation for years as part of anti-ISIS operations.
The decision follows Syrian government forces taking control of camps with IS detainees after the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces withdrew.
Iraq’s government said Sunday that US forces have completed a “full withdrawal” from military facilities within the country’s federal territory, which excludes the semiautonomous Kurdistan region where US troops remain.
Iraq announced the complete withdrawal of troops from the international coalition led by the US from all military bases in the country.
The move brings to a close more than two decades of American military presence in the western part of the country.
