A team at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) has now built a statistical tool that flags the risk of that surge up to five days ahead for Atlantic storms. Current tools look out one to three days. The researchers say the added lead time could give communities more room to prepare before a storm reaches land.
