It's typically only the kickoff of active spring severe weather. But in recent years, including 2025, March outbreaks have been among the worst of the year. Here's what you need to know.
For many years, we have associated the most dangerous tornadoes in a region known as “Tornado Alley,” a large region of the Great Plains that includes the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
A dangerous tornado-producing storm swept through northwestern Oklahoma on Thursday night, prompting urgent warnings from the National Weather Service. Residents in nearby communities including Fairview and Enid were urged to take immediate shelter.
Eight tornadoes moved through Louisiana and Mississippi late Saturday into Sunday, NWS reported. The storms downed powerlines, damaged houses, and uprooted trees.
As for a breakdown by month this spring, forecasters currently predict March to bring in 75-150 tornadoes throughout the month, before April makes the jump to 150-225. May is predicted to bring in the most tornadoes for the spring with a forecasted 200-275 tornadoes.
