Even though fans had wait through an extended hyper-sleep to finally reach Alien: Earth ’s highly anticipated premiere on FX and Hulu, it arrived with all of the expected intergalactic pomp, grandeur and acclaim that I’d hoped for.
The series by creator Noah Hawley is described as a spin-off to the original Ridley Scott-directed film, " Alien ," from 1979. The film follows a space crew aboard the starship, Nostromo, who are on their journey back home when they receive a distress call from an alien vessel.
Scott’s original idea — as Hawley puts it, the invasion of the body snatchers idea — is common in sci-fi. One of the best examples is John Carpenter’s The Thing, which came out three years after Alien, in 1982.
Hulu’s latest sci-fi thriller, which has earned an impressive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is taking over streaming charts. The streamer premiered the first two episodes of Alien: Earth this week, and the show has soared to the top spot on both Hulu in America and Disney+ globally.
Set in 2120, it hinges on a batch of alien and various mutating specimens who crash-land on Earth in a research vessel that’s owned by one of five corporations that now rule during this Corporate Era — a chillingly plausible schematic.
Proof of the franchise's popularity is the brand new Alien: Earth series, which is now streaming on Disney+ (or Hulu in the USA), which Scott chaired as Executive Producer, rather than Director.
