A bill that would make it harder to vote in federal elections is a Republican focus this week, with President Donald Trump calling for enacting the SAVE Act.

A new push to pass a GOP elections bill known as the SAVE America Act is underway in Congress, but Democrats warn the proposal could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.

Ahead of the midterm elections, Republicans are again pushing for legislation that requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to vote.

The Republican-led House of Representatives voted Feb. 11, 2026 to approve the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act – or SAVE America Act. The bill would require individuals to provide proof of citizenship when they register to vote and present photo identification when they do vote in federal elections.

Congress’s expanded use of its oversight mechanism threatens the stability of agency action.
