Prosecutors say Jose Ibarra killed Laken Riley after a struggle, and data from Riley's smartwatch shows her heart stopped beating at 9:28 a.m.

The state has rested its case in the murder trial against Jose Ibarra over the killing of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley. Her mother's last text messages were read aloud to the court from the day she died.

An FBI special agent testified Monday that electronic location data seems to place Georgia nursing student Laken Riley and the man accused of killing her in the same wooded area at the time of her death. Meanwhile, prosecutors also played a recording of Ibarra being grilled by his wife about the case during a jail phone call.

The last moments before Laken Riley was killed while out on a run on the University of Georgia's campus were shown in court Tuesday on the third day of the trial involving the murder of the 22-year-old nursing student.

Georgia nursing student Laken Riley texted and called her mom as she headed out for a run to see whether she had time to chat — but then didn’t respond to her mother’s calls or increasingly frantic text messages.

The prosecution rested its case Tuesday afternoon after calling more than a dozen law enforcement officers, Laken Riley’s roommate and a woman who lived in an apartment with Ibarra to testify. The judge then asked Jose Ibarra if he wants to testify and he said no.

The last known images of Laken Riley before her death were shown Tuesday morning in the trial of the man accused of killing her, while a series of desperate messages from her mother were also read in the trial of Jose Ibarra.
