The White House said it wants to ensure the museums show the "unity, progress and enduring values that define the American story."

The president signed an executive order this year ordering the removal of "improper ideology" from the museum system.

According to the letter sent to Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch III on Tuesday, “the initiative aims to ensure alignment with the president’s directive to celebrate
