The remains of two women have been removed from the debris of a large banyan tree that fell over last weekend in the downtown Hilo area, Hawaii police said.Police first responded to the site of the downed tree on Kilauea Avenue Sunday morning after human remains were discovered deep within the debris more than a week after the tree toppled over on July 12.

Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda spoke to The Conversation's Catherine Cruz about the discovery of two bodies under a historic banyan tree that toppled over last week in Hilo.

Two woman were found dead “deep within” a large banyan tree more than a week after it toppled in Hawaii, police said. No foul play is suspected in their deaths, and “ preliminary observations indicate the women were likely struck by falling tree limbs,” the Hawaiʻi Police Department said in a July 20 news release.
