Seattle’s interim police chief said Monday that she has fired a police officer who in 2023 struck and killed a graduate student from India while responding to an overdose call.

Interim Seattle police Chief Sue Rahr announced Monday that she has fired Kevin Dave, the officer who killed Jaahnavi Kandula in a South Lake Union crosswalk while speeding in his cruiser.

The development comes months after another Seattle police officer Daniel Auderer was fired following his insensitive comments and laughter after Kandula’s death.

The officer was fired nearly two years after hitting and killing Jaahnavi Kandula with his patrol car while responding to a call.
