Bomba is more than music—it’s history, resistance, and identity woven into rhythm and movement. Born in Puerto Rico, Bomba was created by enslaved Africans as a form of expression, communication, and freedom. Every drumbeat tells a story, every step answers the drum, and every song carries the spirit of a people who refused to be silenced. This is culture passed down through generations—alive, powerful, and unapologetically ours. #BombaEsCultura #PuertoRicanRoots #AfroBoricua #OurHistoryOurRhyth

The bomba grew out of the colonial African slave experience. In its style of drumming, singing, and improvisational dancing, it resembles several other West African-derived forms of music and dance in the New World. The plena emerged as a local popular music during the last decades of the nineteenth century. Bomba and plena have become potent symbols of Puerto Rican identity. Since the 1930s, they have spread from their birthplace on the island’s sugarcane plantations and coastal villages to urb

Bomba and plena are percussion-driven musical traditions from Puerto Rico that move people to dance. Often mentioned together as though they were a single musical style, both reflect the African heritage of Puerto Rico, but there are basic distinctions between them in rhythm, instrumentation, and lyrics.
