Today is International Mother Language Day! We wanted to explore how closely intertwined the Sinhala and Tamil languages really are. We were surprised to discover that in day-to-day language, our mother tongues actually share many ‘cognates’ and ‘false friends’. While cognates are words that are pronounced and mean the same, false friends in linguistics are words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings.
