Finger posturing—like holding fingers in stiff or unusual positions or repetitive movements like flicking or wiggling—is something often seen in autistic individuals. It can be a form of stimming (self-stimulatory behavior) or a way to regulate sensory input. It’s also sometimes linked to motor planning differences. Because I have an autistic child, I had a better understanding of traits to look out for and my son (my second) engaged in finger posturing consistently. But context really matters.

It can also involve repeated movements or positions of the hands or fingers, such as flapping, flicking, or bending of the fingers. Andi Putt • Autism • Speech Therapy on Instagram: "🖐️ Finger Posturing is a super common, yet relatively unknown trait of Autism. It can range from clear to subtle - but usually needs to be present relatively often for it to be considered a sign of a possible Autism diagnosis. ❌ So no, playing with your fingers every once in a while is not an Autism characteristic. ✅ Yes, shaping or tensing your fingers or body parts multiple times a day would be considered an Autism characteristic- especially
