I read a lot of comments on forums and other blogs, and have received emails from people asking questions about the difficulty of Semitic languages like Arabic and Hebrew.

Most Semitic languages agree on the word for rain. Arabic has Maṭar. Aramaic has Meṭra. Akkadian had Muṭṭar. Even the Bible uses Maṭar. 🌧️📖 So why does modern Hebrew use Geshem? The honest answer is: We don't really know. It just shows up in the Bible alongside Matar, but its origins are murky. (It might be a scrambled version of an Arabic word for "tears"!) But here is the irony: While Geshem won the battle for the "rain," Matar won the battle for the "umbrella." The Hebrew word for umbrella
