A tree that once made up nearly 25% of the eastern forests was reduced to a functionally extinct species. The Asian fungus Cryphonectria parasitica was accidentally introduced into the United States in the late 1800s. What a great trip! TACF staff Kendra Collins, Vasiliy Lakoba, and Jared Westbrook traveled throughout Maine and Massachusetts chapter orchards in search of the most blight-resistant parent for continued breeding. TACF volunteers and interns graciously hosted us in their homes and showed us the way to the trees in each of these orchards.
