In the 1989 Irish Rally Championship, the Donegal Rally featured a top quality lineup of drivers and machines including David Llewellin (Toyota Celica GT-4), Bertie Fisher (BMW M3 E30), James Cullen (Ford Sierra Cosworth) and Austin MacHale (Ford Sierra RS Cosworth). And, it was Machale who came unstuck on stage 11 (Knockalla - One) when he crashed out at high speed and that was the end of his rally. The overall victory went to David Llewellin, closely followed by Bertie Fisher and James Cullen
